Physics at Work in Essex 2003
The Physics at Work in Essex 2003 event will be held at
Colchester County High
School for Girls on the Afternoon of Tuesday 4th November. This pilot event is
based on the annual Physics at Work event held at the Cavendish Laboratory in
Cambridge each September, and is organised by the Cavendish Laboratory, Clacton
and Harwich Education Action Zone and Colchester County High School for Girls.
The aim of this event is to stimulate interest and encourage wider participation
in physics amongst Y11 students by showcasing the many and varied ways in which
physics is used in the real everyday world. The event will be centred about 6
exhibitors, including Research Groups within the Cavendish Laboratory, local and
national industry.
Small groups of about 15 students accompanied by a teacher will follow a route
through the exhibition defined by the organisers. Each small group, with its
teacher, will visit the six exhibits over a period of about two hours, including
a short break halfway through. Each exhibit usually consists of a short
presentation, practical demonstrations, an opportunity for hands-on involvement
and time for asking questions. A booklet of information is provided to support
the exhibition, allowing teachers to bring ideas back into their lessons later
in the year. This structured approach allows the students to engage thoroughly
with the science on display.
Attendance at this event is strictly limited to those schools groups that have
been invited to participate. If this pilot event is sufficiently successful
similar events may be held in the future. If you are interested in participating
in future educational outreach activities in physics in the East of England please

It would not be possible to run this event the active participation of the exhibitors
and the staff of Clacton and Harwich Education Action Zone and Colchester County High
School for Girls. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them again for all
the time and effort that they have given to the Physics at Work in Essex 2003
