Synopsis of the Competition:
"3 Minute Wonder" is a competition for all researchers in physics related fields, academic or industrial, of postgraduate or postdoctoral level (membership of the IOP not necessary). The aim is to explain your current research in 3 minutes to an audience of scientists who are not specialists in your field. The audience will include a mixture of sixthformers, undergraduates, fellow postgrads and more senior researchers.
Programme for the evening
6pm Welcome by Branch Chair, Lisa Jardine-Wright
6:05pm First half of the entries (determined by drawing lots)
7pm Short address on the IOP's current education campaign by President of the IOP (and competition judge), Prof. Sir Peter Knight.
7:15pm Second half of the entries
8pm Judges final decision
Judging
The audience diversity will also be reflected in the panel of 4 judges who will span teaching, journalism, research and industry. Each 3 minute presentation will be scored immediately afterwards with brief comments from the judges and a mark out of 10 given by each judge.
Prizes
Cash prizes of 250 and 100 pounds (1st and 2nd) will be offered along with a certificate for all those taking part. An annual record of the winners will also be kept in the branch archives.
Rules
- Only non-professional communicators may enter.
- If the number of entries is too high to complete within the time on the 26th January the branch reserves the right to hold an elimination round of presentations on the 19th January with 4 of the Branch committee acting as judges.
- The presentation must be about your own work.
- As part of your presentation you may choose to use:
- 1 powerpoint slide
- a video clip (as long as it is your own clip)
- as many props as you wish.
- The presentation will be timed by a timekeeper and 1 mark will be lost for each 15 seconds above or below the 3 minute requirement.
- The decision of the judges and timekeeper is final.
